The Heart Behind GoodRuption
Meet Kathryn Dilworth, fundraiser and philanthropy scholar:
I am one of the lucky scholars who had the good fortune to study philanthropy at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University, the only doctoral program in philanthropy in the world. My research is on fundraising practice, and I created and published a new fundraising model called The Social Capital Fundraising Model. I also research the impact of nonprofit organizations on community well-being and philanthropy ethics. Much of my research is about the fundraiser experience, and what needs to happen to support the kind of work environment that reflects the spirit of the work they do supporting philanthropy, which, by the way, means “love of humanity.”
I am also a front-line fundraiser with nearly twenty years of experience in the nonprofit sector. I am a passionate advocate for fundraisers. They are the professionals who actually facilitate nonprofit missions with the individuals who want to support them. My research and training are about empowering fundraisers to succeed and achieve their own professional goals.
Kathryn’s Mission:
Philanthropy is due for serious change – a change that heals rather than perpetuates power imbalance and celebrates those whose road to wealth has harmed others. I believe that the change needed will not be facilitated by nonprofit leaders, boards of trustees, or philanthropy scholars but by fundraisers – the very individuals who bridge donors to philanthropy missions every day. We want to help them be successful by providing tools that arm them with the knowledge to build ethical, long-lasting partnerships between donors and organizations and management models that give them the permission, space, and time to do their important work.
